Frederick "Skip" Burkle, Jr., MD, MPH, DTM

Frederick M. Burkle, Jr., MD, MPH, DTM, currently serves as Senior Scholar, Scientist, and Visiting Professor with The Center for Disaster and Refugee Studies at the Schools of Medicine and Public Health, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. He is also Senior Fellow at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Formerly, Dr. Burkle served as the Senior Medical and Public Health Advisor to the US government's Defense Threat Reduction Agency and a the Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Global Health at the US Agency for International Development. Dr. Burkle has worked extensively in many complex emergencies worldwide for the World Health Organization, the US military, and the Red Cross Movement.

Dr. Burkle is a graduate of Saint Michael's College and the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He holds post-graduate degrees from Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, and the University of California at Berkeley, a Diploma in Health Emergencies in Large Populations from the University of Geneva, and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He has published more than 130 scientific articles and is the author of four books on issues of international disaster management.

The recipient of numerous "Excellence in Teaching" and humanitarian service awards Dr. Burkle was awarded the Gorgas Medal for "distinguished work in preventative medicine, groundbreaking work in disaster management and humanitarian assistance, and the training of an entire generation of US and international personnel." In 2007, he was elected to the National Science Foundation's prestigious Institute of Medicine.
