The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is CDC's command center for the coordination of emergency response to domestic and international public health threats and is staffed 24/7. The EOC is equipped with state-of-the-art communications technologies to support information pipelines with state, federal, and international partners. The EOC is the contact for state health agencies for reporting potential public health threats. CDC's new and permanent EOC facility became operational in February 2006 as a 24,000 square foot leading-edge highly secure facility. This facility allows CDC to organize its scientific teams in one location and connect them internally and externally using state-of-the-art technology to ensure an efficient and effective response.
During activation, CDC's Incident Management System is established and responsible for:
- Providing daily situation reports to the DHHS Secretary's Operations Center and public health leaders within CDC and other government agencies;
- Serving as the central location for CDC, state and local experts to gather, analyze, and validate information to strengthen the nation's ability to detect and respond to public health events; and
- Coordinating the deployment and logistical support of staff deployed during an event.
